The Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS) is announcing the continuation of its local and national scholarship program for the 2023-2024 school year. The application period is NOW OPEN through December 8, 2023.
There are three qualification requirements to be considered for the annual scholarships:
- Applicant must be a female student and US citizen
- Applicant must be a student currently residing in PA or attending high school, trade school, junior college, undergraduate school, or graduate school in the Commonwealth.
- Applicant should be considering a career related to transportation may apply. Transportation careers can include:
Planners / Engineers / Economists / Scientists / GIS Mappers / Accounting / CADD Specialists / Managers / Public Relations / Construction / Geologists / Air Traffic Controllers / Public Policy / Finance / Wildlife Specialists / Historians / Architects / Surveyors / Archaeologists / Ecologists / and more…
Interested students may apply for one or more of the following scholarships:
- WTS Central PA Chapter – Colleen Brown High School Scholarship (for high school seniors)
- Trade School/Junior College Scholarship (for those earning their certificate or Associate’s degree)
- Molitoris Leadership Scholarship (for undergraduate students)
- Sharon D. Banks Memorial Scholarship (for undergraduate students)
- WTS Paula Hammond Leadership Legacy Scholarship (for graduate students)

· The Taco Bell Foundation provides young adults (ages 16-26) the opportunity to receive educational funding through the Live Más Scholarship program. This year, they are awarding more than $10 million in scholarships! Beyond the money, Live Más Scholarship recipients join a community of passionate youth who are driven to use their passion to ignite change in their communities and beyond.

This scholarship was established by the estate of “Dot Kemp” to provide tuition payments for a
student graduating from Canton Area High School, who desires to go to a technical institution,
trade school and similar schools. This scholarship is for applicants interested in learning and
practicing trades such as cosmetology, plumbing, welding, forestry, masonry, carpentry, auto
mechanics, auto body, licensed practical nurses, horticulture and courses of a similar nature
Eligibility Criteria:
• Graduating senior from Canton Area High School.
• Accepted into an accredited university, college, or technical school.
• Essay (250 word double spaced) on what makes you an excellent candidate to further
pursue your education.
• A transcript of your high school grades.
• Attach two reference letters.
• An attendance report that includes your past three or four years of education.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.
The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship. The application deadline is Thursday, March 9, 2023.

Susquehanna Beekeepers Association College Scholarship: Established by the Susquehanna Beekeepers Association. Provides a post-secondary scholarship to a high school graduate of northeastern Pennsylvania who will major in agriculture, biology or beekeeping and who write a winning essay about their experience as a beekeeper. The delegated selection committee is responsible for selecting the recipient in consultation with The Community Foundation.

The Twin Tiers Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is pleased to announce our 2023 Margaret R. Brewster scholarship program. Five non-renewable scholarships will be distributed for the 2023-2024 school year. These $2,000 scholarships will be open to high school seniors who identify as female within the Twin Tiers region. The eligible seniors must plan to major in an ABET accredited engineering or CSAB accredited computer science program during the 2023-2024 school year. You will find a copy of our local section application attached, along with eligibility requirements. The deadline for submission for the Twin Tiers SWE application is Friday March 24, 2023. The five recipients will be announced in mid-May. An awards dinner for the recipients and their parents will be held with local SWE members in early June.
The Society of Women Engineers National Scholarship Program is also available and includes multiple scholarships with various due dates. Dr. Jean E. Brenchley Science Award was established through the estate of Dr. Jean E. Brenchley. This award recognizes the achievements of Dr. Brenchley who was a Professor Emeritus, Microbiology and Biotechnology at Penn State University. She was the Director of the Biotechnology Institute at Penn State University. Among many of her honors and awards received, Jean received the Alice Evans Award from the American Society for Microbiology for her long standing commitment to the professional development of women in microbiology. She was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Women’s Anglers group and was an avid fly fisherman. This award is given to a woman in the senior class at Canton Area High School who has demonstrated excellence in academics and who is pursuing science as a career.

This is a newly established scholarship by Guthrie Federal Credit Union. Guthrie Federal Credit Union is deeply committed to supporting the education goals of graduating seniors. This scholarship is open to graduating seniors from Waverly Central High School, Tioga Central High School, New York or from any Bradford County, Pennsylvania high school, as well as parochial schools and home schooled students within these school districts. Applicants should have a strong work ethic and an understanding of community service through volunteerism.

Applicants must be a Canton Area High School graduate, be in the top 25% of their graduating class, and be of high moral character and going into elementary or secondary teaching as a profession.

Barbara Sowinski started this fund in 2009 to benefit any Bradford County High School Graduate pursuing a career in music. Applicant must be a resident of Bradford County, accepted into the music department of an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in music. The head of the music department of each eligible high school in Bradford County can nominate up to two candidates for the scholarship. The applicants will perform at a Towanda Music Society function for the selection committee.
